2006 Chevy Monte Carlo 3.5 V6. Coolant leak: coolant only leaks when engine is cold, after it warms up it stops. It looks like it leaks from the side of the engine right around the belt. Coolant shoots up off the belt. I don't know could it be the water pump, head gasket, thermostat or something else. Do you have any clue where the leak is coming from? Do you guys see this problem a lot in Chevy vehicles and how much would it cost to fix it?
Answer:The water pump is a common cause for coolant leaks on this engine.Using a small mirror to look on the bottom side of the pump is the best way to tell. Or, looking up at the bottom of the pump from under the car. The pump is closer to the bottom of the engine, on the front of the engine.
Another possibility is what is called the "Coolant Crossover". This is an aluminum manifold that connects the front and rear cylinder head. It is on the front of the motor. Much harder to determine if that is the leak. A pressure test would be needed, along with careful inspection.
Cost to replace water pump is approx. $350
To replace crossovers gaskets, approx. $500.

Question:I have a 2002 Monte Carlo SS , My low coolant light came on , had it checked and they said it wasn't low . One week later the thermostat went high and the hot coolant light came on . The car over heated and there was some steam coming out of the engine . Do you know what this could be ? There is plenty of fluid in the radiator and the coolant tanks , Oil has just recently been changed.
Answer: As long as you are sure that the the coolant is not low, a couple of things can cause an overheat. A sticking thermostat is an inexpensive repair. Could be a faulty coolant level sensor that causes the low coolant light to come on when it is full. That engine is common for the upper intake manifold or its gasket going bad causing coolant loss internally and externally, which would give off steam. If the coolant fans do not come on, that will give an overheat causing the coolant to blow out the overflow tank and give steam. Need to have the cooling system pressure tested for leaks.
A/c Recharge High Pressure Side
A/C problem. 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo / Canada.
I am trying to recharge a/c and i am unable to locate the high pressure switch to activate compressor i have been unable to locate please help.
Answer:The A/C pressure switch is located in an A/C line near the accumulator. It is located under the air cleaner box. Kind of hard to see.
