Question: I have a 2001 Ford Explorer 4.0. Engine turns over but won't start. If I push the gas I can get it running. When I take my foot off it dies. Changed the fuel filter, new battery, fuel pump turns on
,fuel pump safety switch is down.checked all fuses.no check engine light.can you please help?
Answer: If the only way you can get it to run is hold the throttle open a little by pressing the gas pedal, then that means the minimum idle is too low. this can be caused by a few things.
You could have a vacuum leak. This causes a very lean condition and can make your Ford hard to start.
The throttle bore and plate may have a lot of carbon buildup and the computer cannot control the idle properly. Try a good cleaning of the throttle.
